SI vs IEC — Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GiB?

Decimal (SI) — used by manufacturers

1 KB = 1,000 bytes · 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes · 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. A "1 TB" hard drive = exactly 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.

Binary (IEC) — used by operating systems

1 KiB = 1,024 bytes · 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes · 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Windows/macOS divide by 1,024 repeatedly.

Example: 1 TB drive step by step

Manufacturer advertises:1,000,000,000,000 bytes
÷ 1,024 =976,562,500 KiB
÷ 1,024 =953,674.32 MiB
÷ 1,024 =931.32 GiB
Windows/macOS shows:~931.3 GiB
Difference: 6.9% less than advertised — this is not a bug, just different unit conventions.
